In the late 1920's, before the Piaget name gained worldwide fame, the family's small staff of master watchmakers and jewelers built expensive watches to meet the needs of their wealthy clientele. Pouring a great deal of individual attention and care into each piece, each year they created a small quantity of high quality watches.
Those destined for the U.S. market were cased stateside by Piaget contractors to avoid tariffs.
The beautiful Piaget showcased in this offering is an original example of this phenomenon. Crafted from platinum and bejeweled with thirty-eight (38), high quality diamonds, the case embodies wonderful Art Deco styling in the spirit of iconic New York architecture of the Empire State Building or One Fifth Ave.
Besides the distinctive case, the very fine handwound Piaget movement also showcases high quality workmanship from the era, insuring the watch's technical execution was as well done as its aesthetic design.
Its movement functions in principle using a similar strategic design to Rolex's celebrated Prince movement. It is baguette and features an oversized winding barrel and balance wheel. By placing this two mechanisms at opposite ends of the movement the watch achieves incredible levels of accuracy and carries a longer power reserve, enabling it to run longer and more accurately on a single wind.
This early Piaget has all of its original parts including its very pleasing deep blued hands and even its winding crown. Its dial is correctly unsigned as was customary for the era before the days of ubiquitous branding.
One of our watchmakers has disassembled it down to its last screw and cleaned and oiled it making it ready for immediate enjoyment. Photos of the inside available upon request.
Included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. warranty on the movement and its function and a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity.
A distinctive and rare vintage luxury watch that exudes taste but won't break the bank from what became a premier name. Modern Piaget don't come close to matching the charm of this original.
