1928 Rolex Vintage Antique Cabriolet Clock Watch - Sterling Silver

Rolex

Item No. 9097

Today's offering showcases this rare and very interesting Rolex cabriolet clock watch made between the Wars in 1928.

By the 1920's, Rolex had shifted the majority of its production to wristwatches however they continued to make a relatively small number of traditional pocket watches and a very few other timepieces. The convertible clock featured in this offering is an example of this phenomenon.

We are pleased to offer it. It exhibits fine European Art Deco period design in both its case and dial. Functionally, its case has foldable parts so that it can be displayed on a desk or placed on a table as a travel clock or even carried as a purse watch. It can also be used as a pendant hung from a chain.

Its case is based on the British invention patent No. 265 886, delivered on February 17, 1927, to Carl Friedrich Bosch, Pforzheim, Baden (Germany), for a “Improvements in or relating to Clocks”; also patented in Germany, Switzerland, U.S.A. and France.

It is decorated with fine Tuxedo pinstriping on the front and the back and also on both sides. Sterling silver and signed Rolex, it bears hallmarks for Glasgow from 1928. Powering the watch is its original Rolex signed movement.

It remains in original condition.

Its case presents in excellent condition with fairly light to moderate wear and some loss of fine engraving detail. Its two-tone silver dial is also in excellent condition with fairly mild aging. And its high grade movement is very clean.

One of our Master Watchmakers, who used to be the watchmaker for an authorized Rolex dealer and was given special training by Rolex at their Beverly Hills Service Center to be an authorized Rolex watchmaker, has fully serviced the watch which consists of fully disassembling the movement, carefully inspecting each part, installing a new mainspring, polishing the pivots, reassembling and lubricating the movement, and extensive timing testing and regulation (an $895 value).

Amazingly after nearly a century, it continues to keep very accurate time.

Included with the purchase is a one-year warranty on the movement and its function and a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity.

Accompanying it is what appears to be its original 8.5 inch silver chain with interesting terminal clip that is hallmarked.

Note: This clock watch was previously sold by Antiquorum.
