The renowned Parisian jeweler Verger Freres is known for creating some of the most exceptional clock and watch masterpieces of the Art Deco era. Often referred to as the "jewelers jeweler" because they worked on some of the finest pieces for the most prestigious houses, and known for their nearly unrivaled creativity and design during the period, they crafted special pieces for the likes of Cartier, Lacloche Frères, Boucheron, Van Cleef & Arpels, Chaumet, Tiffany, Trabert & Hoeffer, Black, Starr & Frost and Bulgari.

In 1872 Ferdinand Verger, the company founder, became an agent for Vacheron & Constantin and continued to make a small number of exquisite pieces for the company over the next six decades. Arguably the most famous is the Vacheron & Constantin / Verger shutter watch, of which an example can be found here.

Black, Starr & Frost-Gorham ranked with Cartier and Tiffany & Co., and the watch bears the distinguished company's name on the dial. Founded in 1810, Black, Staff & Frost is the oldest continuously operating jewelry firm in the United States; in 1962 they purchased Cartier's U.S. operation.

It is gorgeously designed and perfectly executed with its heavy original 18K gold case in the shape of a book whose front and back covers both open. The inside of the front and back covers of the book are each designed to hold a photograph or small personal object like a lock of hair.

The case is adorned with enamel in Greek Key motifs and a line of diamonds on the front cover. It is an exquisite objet de vertu.

Powering the watch is its original handwound Vacheron & Constantin movement, one fit for a midsized mens watch from the era. It is high-grade with five adjustments.

We were fortunate to acquire it in all-original condition. It is very honest. The spine has two areas of partial enamel loss. Otherwise it presents in very fine condition. Its dial is untouched.

One of our Master Watchmakers has disassembled its fine movement down to its last screw and cleaned and oiled it making it ready for immediate enjoyment. It is keeping very accurate time.
