1960's Girard Perregaux Vintage HF High Frequency Automatic Chronometer, Date - 18K Gold Plated & Stainless Steel

Girard Perregaux

Item No. 8632

The Girard Perregaux wristwatch showcased in today's offering is one of the company's sought after vintage models. This officially certified chronometer employed a long list of advanced technical features. It was so accurate, in fact, that 70% of the chronometer certificates issued in 1967 by the Neuchâtel Observatory were for these special high-frequency chronometers.

Here are some of the watch's features:

  • "High Frequency" 36,000 beats per hour balance system, twice the speed of many traditional wristwatches (most vintage watches beat 18,000 times per hour) and made to accommodate changes in temperature. For decades 36,000 beats per hour was as fast as any production watch ticked.
  • Without going too much into the physics of the balance in the movements of high beat watches, all other factors being equal, the physics of a high-beat movement are slightly more favorable for consistent timekeeping than the physics of a normal beat movement.
  • Officially certified as a chronometer by the C.O.S.C
  • Very effective Gyromatic system requires smaller wrist movement to keep the watch fully powered. This also helps the watch spend more time running at its peak power level which can give more accurate timekeeping
  • Jeweled with 39 rubies to reduce friction between the moving parts
  • Rugged and elegant waterproof style case

In certain respects, these watches and Longines high beat chronometer were the best of the best when it came to accuracy in a widely-produced watch at the time with a beat frequency much higher than that of Rolexes from the era.

Our HF Chronometer is all original.

The case top is in gorgeous condition. It has never been polished and presents as just short of mint with some hairlines from use and others swapping bands. The back shows a couple remnants of wear and previous polishing.

Its wonderful original dial with distinctive vintage styled markers is mint. And its high-beat chronometer movement is near pristine. Photos of the inside available upon request.

On the wrist, it presents in beautiful condition.

One of our Master Watchmakers has disassembled it down to its last screw and cleaned and oiled it. It is running extremely strong and true, keeping time like a brand new watch in our testing position.

For the finishing touch, we have equipped it with a brand new crocodile strap making it ready for immediate enjoyment.

Included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate.
