1961 Omega Constellation Vintage Mens Automatic Chronometer Watch, Date - Stainless Steel

Omega

Item No. 9731

Omega's flagship line for decades, the Constellation represents style, luxury, attention to detail, robust function, and most all, superior precision. Elegant and stately, it is suitable for both casual and professional dress.

Today's auction showcases this gorgeously restored 1961 Constellation. Featuring a "De Luxe" dial and Bombe style case with lyre lugs, it showcases the quality that made these classic watches Omega's flagship line.

The 1960's were an important decade for Omega. In 1959 Omega introduced a new series of movements that would become famous powering their flagship watch, the Constellation, and would be officially certified by the "Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres" (Swiss watch governing body) as a chronometer, the highest honor given to a movement. The next year Omega produced 20,000 Constellations in succession that all achieved chronometer status with no failures.

One of the movements in this new series was the Caliber 561. Made exclusively for the Constellation, it was one of the very finest volume-produced automatics from the era and is the mechanism that powers the Constellation featured here.

Here are some of its features:

  • High grade movement officially certified as a chronometer by the C.O.S.C., the highest distinction that can be given to a watch based on its accuracy
  • Beautiful and desirable black "De Luxe" dial
  • Long 50 hour running reserve keeps the watch consistently running, even when not worn daily
  • Precision micrometer regulator for small timing adjustments
  • Classic and elegant waterproof style case with gold observatory logo on the back

It has fully Omega parts and has just finished a true expertly done restoration. It presents in gorgeous condition - a 9.3 out of 10. Our photos couldn't do it justice.

It case presents as just short of mint with light signs of previous polishing. Despite what the photos seem to suggest, the observatory logo on the back still retains all of its stars. On the wrist it presents as mint.

Its dial has been previously meticulously refinished - the printing could pass as Omega factory done to the naked eye. As many collectors might know, black dialed steel Constellations are very rare and valuable. When we purchased the watch the dial was black and had already been refinished so we can't speak to the original color, and it has been priced accordingly. An Omega Extract could confirm the color, and if it originally was black, then the watch would be quite valuable.

As part of the restoration a Master Watchmaker has freshly overhauled it. It is running strong and true, keeping very accurate time.

For the finishing touch we have equipped it with a brand new calfskin leather strap and Omega style aftermarket buckle making it ready for immediate enjoyment.

Included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate.

A more than six decade old Omega that looks like new on the wrist!
