Many experienced watch collectors know well the connection between famous explorers and their watches. Companies like Rolex, Omega, and Jaeger-LeCoultre are a few of the more notable brands to send their watches on far reaching expeditions. One of the lesser known Swiss brands to do so was Enicar, a brand with certain models really growing in collectability.
Intended for use by pilots, travelers, and airline and marine personnel, the Sherpa Guide gained its name for the fact that Enicar watches had been recently used on an expedition that summited Mt. Everest.
Although it has a 24 hour GMT hand, the watch is better characterized as a World timer. In its advertising Enicar claimed it was the only watch of its kind. Besides the 24 hour GMT hand it features the names of important cities from around the globe grouped together by time zone and printed on the rotating bezel dial so the owner could see the exact time of any location in the world at just a glance.
Powered the watch is an automatic movement with date.
Besides is very cool blue and red Pepsi bezel, what is quite striking about this watch is its size. Its ESPA Super Compressor divers case measures 43mm without the crown, almost 10% larger than the largest Rolex sport watches from the day, and it feels larger than them.
It is in honest original condition with all original parts. As is normally the case with these the bezel shows significant wear.
A Master Watchmaker has just fully serviced the watch, and it is keeping time within approx. one second per hour. For the finishing touch a new leather strap has been installed making it ready for immediate enjoyment. If you would like a canvas or other different strap please inquire.
Included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. warranty on the movement and its function and a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity.
Enicar:
For those unfamiliar, Enicar made high quality Swiss watches that rivaled the quality of those of Breitling, Tag Heuer, and other more recognized luxury brands. Particularly popular in Asia, where prices for their watches were lower than the companies competing for market share in the luxury market yet of similar quality, Enicar carved out a very successful business. Their watches like the Seapearl 600 faired on par or better in U.S. Navy's tests than the Rolex Submariner 6538 and Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Milspec and also scaled Everest on the wrist of Albert Eggler's expedition party.
Enicar is the Swiss watch mogul and founder Ariste Racine's last name spelled backwards.
