Item No. 9771
Sold Out
Today's offering showcases this classic and uncommon example of one of Omega's vintage gent's Geneve watches in near new-old-stock condition with its original papers and boxes. It's a wonderful time capsule piece.
Its original papers show a sale date of July 16, 1969, just four days before we landed on the moon. At the factory it might have laid next to the Speedmaster Professional that was headed to the Moon. It offers some of the things that we really like from Omegas in this period.
Beginning in 1953 Omega placed the name Geneve on the dials of some of the members of the 30mm collection which at the time were produced in the company's workshops in Geneve (to put Geneve on a dial of a watch certain components and processes must take place in Geneve). According to Omega the name referred to the Genevan Observatory where the early 30mm calibers set a number of records.
It features a classic waterproof style tonneau case, eggshell dial with baguette markers, and automatic movement.
We've owned many dozens of similar watches, this is only the second we've had in this style that is automatic. To accommodate the larger movement the case is just slightly larger than the ubiquitous handwound model.
Powering the watch is Omega's top-tier caliber 552 movement used in Seamasters from the era, and one of the last superior 500's series movements used before Omega began trying to reduce their costs. It has 24 jewels, seven more than in many similar movements, is one of the finest mass-produced automatic movements from era.
It is a wonderful time capsule piece. It is like new-old-stock with the only exception that the case back has a couple of marks from previously being opened by the auction company who sold it. Every part is original, and it's as honest as they come.
With the exception of the couple of thin hairlines on the back mentioned above, the rest of the case is like new-old-stock. It has never been polished.
Its untouched original is mint. And it movement is pristine.
Save for wiping it down, we have left the watch just as we acquired it. We have timed it on a machine that simulates it being worn on the wrist, and it is keeping very accurate time. If you would like one of our Master Watchmakers to service it, please inquire.
For the finishing touch, we have equipped it with a brand new Teju lizard strap and aftermarket Omega buckle making it ready for immediate enjoyment.
Accompanying the watch are its original boxes, booklet, and papers. Included with the purchase is a one-year international warranty on the movement and its function.
