1974 Bulova Accutron Vintage Day Date Retro Mens Bracelet Watch, Stainless Steel - New-Old-Stock

Bulova

Item No. 5840

Launched in 1960, the Accutron at the time was the world's first fully electric watch and the most accurate timekeeping mechanism ever devised. They are remarkable watches with a fascinating story - the tuning fork technology was originally developed for NASA because of its accuracy and had to be hidden from the Russians.

The Accutron was so accurate that the U.S. government asked Bulova to delay the release of the cutting edge movement for fear the technology may fall into the hands of the Russians. An Accutron watch movement sits on the moon's Sea of Tranquility today, in an instrument placed there in 1969 by Apollo 11 astronauts.

Today's offering showcases this uncommon, striking, and slightly exotic day date Accutron in true new-old-stock original condition showing only very slight handling wear. We acquired it from the collection of noted collector, Mack Davis. It's 2182 caliber has a semi-quick-setting day of the week and a quick-setting date.

If you're not familiar with Accutrons, here are some of its special features:

  • Originally guaranteed to be 99.9977% accurate on your wrist (not just in a laboratory)
  • Durable and simple - its 12 moving parts don't require usual watch maintenance and repair
  • It never needs winding - a remarkable feat fifty years ago
  • Awesome two-tone blue dial with vignette effect

It has its original Accutron band and buckle, with the buckle still covered in plastic. Accompanying it are its original box and tags - a very rare true time capsule piece!

A new battery has just been installed. Included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. warranty on the movement and its function.

Note that we have several other special Accutrons we are offering for sale from the Mack Davis colleciton. If you are an Accutron collector you don't want to miss them.

Bulova Accutron:
Accutrons were originally guaranteed to be 99.9977% accurate on your wrist (not just in a laboratory). The fact that they never needed to be wound, was astounding at the time and resulted in their sweeping popularity.
