1979 Rolex GMT Master Vintage Mens Ref. 1675/3 Black Bezel Watch with Nipple Dial - 14K Gold & Stainless Steel

Rolex

Item No. 6495

Today's offering showcases this very cool "nipple dial" two-tone black version of the famous 1675. It is a 5.9 million serial number. The black bezel combined with the Jubilee bracelet give it an incredibly classy vintage style.

One of the more prevalent versions is the all steel Pepsi bezel version, and these less often seen two-tone versions showcase several very interesting features different from the steel 1675's:

  • Nipple dial - The dial of this particular GMT-Master 1675/3 is has three noteworthy attributes. First it is referred to as a “nipple” dial because of the cone shape of non-primary gold hour-markers – a very distinct characteristic that contrasts the more common flatter lume plots usually found on Rolex GMT dials. The dial is also a black glossy gilt dial and is nicely accented with a golden Rolex logo crown at 12 o’clock rather than the printed crowns used in later models.
  • Rolesor case - Rolex first offered the watch in only stainless steel, and it wasn't until over a decade later that a two-toned yellow gold and stainless steel version was offered. The mixing of the two metals is known as Rolesor by Rolex and the 14k gold is found on the bracelet, bezel, winding crown. Adding the precious metal significantly upped the luxury quotient of this quintessential pilot's watch.
  • Black bezel - The strong black bezel gives a unique level of class to the precious metal adorned GMT's and was praised when it was launched. The combination of black bezel with golden printing and glossy black dial with golden accents presents beautifully - and one of our favourite things about this GMT is that it goes a step further with the gorgeous lume really matching the tone of the numbers on the bezel.
  • Jubilee bracelet - We really like the look of this watch on either an Oyster or Jubilee bracelet. The collector we purchased this from actually had both for it to be able to change the look. But this period correct Jubilee is what was on the watch when he purchased it and its three solid gold centre links and Jubilee design it an incredibly classy style.

It is in beautiful condition, and its untouched original dial is gorgeous. It is in particularly well-preserved condition with a very even color and lightly toned luminous. The hands still retain original Rolex factory applied luminous.

Accompanying it are its Rolex boxes.

Our Master Watchmaker has fully serviced the watch which consists of fully disassembling the movement, carefully inspecting each part, replacing any overly worn components, reassembling and lubricating the movement, replacing all of the waterproofing seals with new Rolex gaskets, and extensive timing testing and regulation (a $795 value). It continues to keep time nearly on par with a new GMT.

Included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. international warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate attesting to its performance.

The GMT

The 1675 GMT Master watch embodies the qualities sought after by today's aviators and international travellers: distinctive design, precision, sturdiness, and 24 hour capabilities.

When the world's first successful intercontinental jet passenger aircraft, the Boeing 707, entered service in 1956 it brought with it a new phenomenon - "Jet Lag." Pan Am, at the time the world's largest airline, worried about the effect of jet lag on its pilots. After much research on the subject, they advised their pilots to stay on "home time" when travelling abroad.

To meet the pilot's needs for easily knowing both local time and "home time" Pan Am formed a joint task force with Rolex to create a special watch for just that purpose - the GMT Master. Originally a utilitarian tool watch it featured a 24-hour hand complemented by a rotating 24-hour bezel. The first version of the GMT was worn by Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore in Goldfinger.
