One of the iconic mid-century American watch companies was Bulova. To use the cliche, their offerings were as American as baseball and apple pie and could be found on many Americans' wrists and desks.

Launched in 1960, the Accutron was the world's first fully electric watch and at the time the most accurate timekeeping mechanism ever devised. They are remarkable watches with a fascinating story.

The Accutron was so accurate that NASA asked Bulova if they could use the technology for timing for new satellites and for timekeeping in their spacecraft. The U.S. government even asked Bulova to delay the release of their cutting edge new watches for fear the technology might fall into the hands of the Russians. An Accutron watch movement sits on the moon's Sea of Tranquility today, in an instrument placed there in 1969 by Apollo 11 astronauts.

Miss. Garbo's Accutron desk clock has a distinctive brass case and diminutive size and appears to be an early example of an Accutron, when the technology was especially cutting edge and exciting.

Its dial is the same design and construction that was use on the company's wristwatches. The clock is in essence an Accutron movement and dial that Bulova placed into a small desk clock case.

Greta Garbo:
Born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson on September 18th, 1905, Greta Garbo, was a Swedish-American actress who is widely regarded as one of the greatest actresses in the history of film. The American Film Institute in 1999 ranked Garbo fifth on its list of the greatest female stars of classic Hollywood cinema.

Three times Garbo was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress and twice received the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actress. In a 1950 Daily Variety opinion poll, Garbo was voted "Best Actress of the Half Century", and in 1957, she was given The George Eastman Award, awarded by George Eastman House for distinguished contribution to the art of film. She also received many other distinctions and honors, including in her native Sweden.

Known for her melancholic, somber persona, her portrayals of tragic characters, and her subtle and understated performances, Garbo captivated audiences worldwide with her unparalleled talent and charisma.

Garbo began her career with a minor role in the 1924 Swedish film The Saga of Gösta Berling, but it was her performance in Flesh and the Devil (1927), her third movie, that made her an international star. Her success caught the attention of Louis B. Mayer, chief executive of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), who brought her to Hollywood in 1925.

Garbo went on to star in many well-known silent films, including The Mysterious Lady (1928) and The Kiss (1929). Her transition to sound films was marketed with the tagline "Garbo talks!" for her first sound film, Anna Christie (1930), and her performances in this film and Romance earned her the first of three Academy Award nominations for Best Actress.

Throughout the 1930s, Garbo continued to star in successful films such as Mata Hari (1931), Susan Lenox (Her Fall and Rise) (1931), Grand Hotel (1932), Queen Christina (1933), and Anna Karenina (1935). Her performance as the doomed courtesan Marguerite Gautier in Camille (1936) is considered by many critics and film historians to be her finest, and it earned her a second Academy Award nomination.

She retired from the screen at only 35 years old after acting in 28 films. In 1954, Garbo was awarded an Academy Honorary Award for her luminous and unforgettable screen performances.

After retiring from acting, Garbo became an art collector and shunned publicity while leading a private life. Her paintings included works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Pierre Bonnard, and Kees van Dongen. She remained an enduring cultural icon, inspiring new generations of filmmakers and audiences alike with her legendary performances and enigmatic persona.

Despite her reputation for reclusiveness, she is said to have had many friends with whom she socialized and traveled. During her long retirement, she walked the streets of New York City, dressed informally, and wore large sunglasses. "Garbo-watching" became a sport for the media, admirers, and inquisitive New Yorkers, yet she held on to her elusive mystique to the end.

Garbo's legacy as one of the greatest actresses of all time continues to be celebrated today, and her impact on the world of film and popular culture is a testament to her talent and enduring appeal.
