In December 1862, the nation reeled from the devastating Battle of Fredericksburg (December 11–15, 1862), where Union forces under Major General Ambrose Burnside suffered a crushing defeat against Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s entrenched army. The staggering loss — more than 12,000 Union casualties — sent shockwaves through the North, dampening morale as winter set in.

Meanwhile, in the White House, President Abraham Lincoln was preparing to take one of the boldest steps in American history. On January 1, 1863, just weeks after Fredericksburg, the Emancipation Proclamation took effect, declaring enslaved people in Confederate-held territories to be free. Though its immediate impact was limited geographically, it transformed the war into a moral crusade against slavery and ensured that any hope of foreign intervention on behalf of the Confederacy would be politically untenable.

In daily life, both Union and Confederate citizens endured shortages, inflation, and uncertainty. Railroads carried troops and supplies through snow-covered landscapes, factories churned out arms and uniforms, and newspapers across the country carried news from the front. Against this turbulent backdrop, skilled watchmakers in the North continued to produce fine timepieces — practical necessities for soldiers, railroad men, and civilians alike. A watch made in these months would have ticked through a turning point in American history, keeping time as the nation’s course shifted toward freedom and eventual reunification.

One of our Master Watchmakers has disassembled the watch down to its last screw and serviced it making it ready for immediate enjoyment.

Kindly note that these were not highly jeweled watches, and after 150 years the movements generally have some wear from use. In the midst of the American Civil War, when the fate of the Union was still uncertain, the American Watch Co. production ground to a halt. However, the company decided to downsize to the lowest possible level to keep the factory open. It worked: Upon his Gettysburg Address, President Lincoln became the proud owner of a William Ellery model Waltham watch. McLean was one of the clear enduring and culturally significant American singer-songwriters of the twentieth century.

Thoughtful, reflective, and deeply connected to tradition, he has long been associated with things that carry history and meaning. This classic Waltham pocket watch, practical and timeless in its design, fits naturally within that sensibility.

Don McLean’s place in American cultural history is firmly secured by his 1971 epic American Pie, a song that has transcended popular music to become a generational touchstone. Frequently cited among the greatest songs of all time, it is studied, debated, and endlessly referenced for its poetic encapsulation of social change, musical history, and collective memory. Few works in American songwriting have achieved the same combination of commercial success, cultural penetration, and lasting interpretive depth.

Beyond that singular achievement, McLean sustained a long and respected career as a recording artist and performer. His catalog includes acclaimed albums such as American Pie, Don McLean, and Homeless Brother, and he scored multiple international hits, including his chart-topping rendition of Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) - a song that introduced millions to the emotional power of Van Gogh’s life and work through music. Across decades of touring, McLean built a reputation as a deeply committed performer and storyteller, earning admiration from peers, critics, and audiences worldwide.

In recognition of his lasting contributions, McLean was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, a distinction reserved for writers whose work has shaped the fabric of American music. His songs have been covered by countless artists across genres, and his influence can be felt well beyond the folk revival era from which he emerged. Rather than the more typical floral or geometric decoration, the front is engraved with an unmistakable military tableau: a cannon flanked by stacked cannonballs and crossed flags, with architectural elements in the background. The imagery is bold yet restrained, and deeply evocative. Watches of this period rarely carry such overt martial symbolism, making this example both visually and historically distinctive.

We have owned more than a dozen Waltham watches made during the Civil War and seen many more - this is the first we have come across with military imagery on the case.

The timing of its production adds a powerful layer of context. In November 1860, Abraham Lincoln had just been elected President of the United States. Southern states were already debating secession; South Carolina would formally secede the following month in December. Newspapers were filled with speeches, militia drills, political rallies, and growing uncertainty about the nation’s future. Military imagery - cannons, flags, artillery - was increasingly visible in patriotic art, broadsides, and personal objects. It is within this charged national atmosphere that this watch was made. The engraved cannon motif may well reflect the rising tensions and martial sentiment of the moment, capturing in metal the visual language of a country bracing for conflict.

By April 1861, shots would be fired at Fort Sumter and the nation would be at war. This watch, already completed and in circulation, would have existed in that exact transitional moment - from anxious anticipation to open conflict. Whether carried by a civilian, a politically interested leader, or a soldier, it embodies the atmosphere of a nation on the brink. The engraving is not generic decoration; it feels timely, contemporary to the events unfolding around it.

Here is a little more about it...

* Handsome original silver case with unusual military engraving

* Original porcelain dial that presents beautifully with original blue steel hands

* Large 18 size, measuring approximately a full 56mm in diameter

* Key wound movement with winding key

Its original silver case is in honest condition. In the midst of the American Civil War, when the fate of the Union was still uncertain, the American Watch Co. production ground to a near halt. The company decided to downsize to the lowest possible level to keep the factory open. It worked: Upon his Gettysburg Address, President Lincoln became the proud owner of a William Ellery model Waltham watch. Another of Lincoln's watches resides in the collection of the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian.

We are very pleased to offer today this Civil War Era Waltham, that according to the company's hand-written ledger, was produced in 1865 and finished in October of 1865 (see a photo of the page below).

The period during which this watch and many of its components were produced was one of the most turbulent and transformative in American history. As parts of the movement and case were being manufactured, the Civil War was still actively raging across the country. Rail lines were carrying troops and supplies instead of just commerce, newspapers were filled with battlefield reports from places like Gettysburg, Petersburg, and Atlanta, and the nation’s future remained uncertain. By the time this watch was finalized and entered into Waltham’s factory ledger in October 1865, the war had only recently ended. Abraham Lincoln had been assassinated just six months earlier, soldiers were still returning home, and the country had begun the long and difficult process of Reconstruction.

Precision timekeeping would become increasingly critical in the years that followed, particularly as railroads expanded and American manufacturing accelerated. Waltham was positioned at the forefront of that transformation, pioneering interchangeable-part production methods that would influence not only watchmaking, but American industrial manufacturing as a whole.

It has s a P.S. Bartlett grade movement - one of the better-appointed early grades produced by the American Watch Company. Named after one of the company’s early leaders, the Bartlett grade reflects Waltham’s effort not only to standardize production through interchangeable parts, but to elevate quality and finishing during these formative years. It features an engraved balance cock and blued screws, details that underscore the higher-grade finish of this early American Watch Co. production.

The Appleton, Tracy & Co. signature places this watch firmly within the earliest chapter of the company’s history, before the Waltham name became dominant.
