One of the iconic mid-century American watch companies was Bulova. To use the cliche, their offerings were as American as baseball and apple pie and could be found on many Americans' wrists.
Launched in 1960, the Accutron was the world's first fully electric watch and at the time the most accurate timekeeping mechanism ever devised. They are remarkable watches with a fascinating story.
The Accutron was so accurate that NASA asked Bulova if they could use the technology for timing for new satellites and for timekeeping in their spacecraft. The U.S. government even asked Bulova to delay the release of their cutting edge new watches for fear the technology might fall into the hands of the Russians. An Accutron watch movement sits on the moon's Sea of Tranquility today, in an instrument placed there in 1969 by Apollo 11 astronauts.
The Spaceview, Bulova's Accutron watch without a dial, was never intended by Bulova to be sold; it was a salesman's demonstration watch and jeweler's display.
Here are some of the watch's special features:
- Originally guaranteed to be 99.9977% accurate on your wrist (not just in a laboratory)
- Durable and simple - its 12 moving parts don't require usual watch maintenance and repair
- It never needs winding - a remarkable feat fifty years ago
We were fortunate to acquire this all original and beautiful condition Spaceview from the collection of noted collector, Mack Davis. It appears to have been much its life stored away.
The case body shows light marks and no significant wear. The back and crystal are mint.
It comes with original Accutron band and buckle.
We have just had the movement fully serviced and the coil replaced by one of the leading Accutron experts in the North America.
Included with the purchase is a one-year warranty on the movement and its function and a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity.
Note: Bulova recently created a limited re-edition of the Spaceview in 1,000 pieces that sells for $4,000 USD. Following is a link for further information on the Spaceview and vintage ads.
This an opportunity to own an all original collectible historical watch that won't break your budget.
