Today's Watch of the Week showcases this rare edition of a Cartier Tank.
Designed personally by Louis Cartier in 1917 and patterned after an army tank, Cartier's iconic Tank watch symbolized speed, achievement, and being unstoppable.
Worn by General Pershing in 1918, Clark Gable in 1948, and Muhammed Ali for many years, the Cartier men's Tank is a true classic in the world of vintage dress watches.
This very fine and rare version of the Tank features a Cartier caliber 21 ultra thin handwound movement, a much higher grade mechanism that what's found in most other vintage Tanks and would the similar to the more recent Collection Privee or Cartier Fine Watchmaking specialized elite level watches.
It has six adjustments, and was made by Frederic Piguet, and is an ultra-thin movement measuring only approximately 1.73mm thick, not too far at the time from the record for the thinnest normal movement, in the same ballpark as the famous ultra-thins like the AP / V & C 1000/2000 movements, and even thinner than the Piaget 9p. The complete watch measures a mere 5mm thick.
Besides it very refined movement, it also has a beautiful guilloche dial, which is not often found on vintage Tanks from this era. We have owned one other example of this watch and interestingly it did not have the guilloche dial.
We love it - it is supremely elegant and well executed. It is fully Cartier down to the original dial, hands, crown, and buckle.
Our watchmaker has just freshly cleaned and oiled the movement, which is running very true. If you are looking for a timelessly classic high end mens watch, this is a great choice.
Like always included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate.
