When Cartier introduced the Roadster in the early 2000s it represented a bold shift for the maison. Cartier had long been known for its refined rectangular watches - the Tank, the Santos, the Tortue - but the Roadster embraced a new aesthetic that blended Cartier elegance with the dynamic spirit of vintage sports cars.
Roadsters were one of Cartier's hottest watches and have been discontinued, and this gorgeous example is available for a fraction of the retail price.
Its sculpted tonneau case flows smoothly into the integrated bracelet like the body panels of a classic road-racing machine, giving the watch a sense of motion even when it is still.
The dial of this Roadster is one of its most recognizable features. Large radial Arabic numerals echo the markings of a speedometer, while the concentric rings of the dial create a feeling of depth and movement. The magnified date aperture, integrated directly into the crystal, adds another signature design element and contributes to the instrument-like look that defines this version of the model, which has a stronger automotive aesthetic than that of the traditionally styled silver dial version.
While unmistakably sporty, the Roadster remains distinctly Cartier. The polished case surfaces, the elegant proportions, and the cabochon-set crown ensure the watch carries the refinement expected from the Parisian house. It is a watch that bridges two worlds - sport and sophistication - making it just as comfortable under a cuff as it is worn casually.
Shortly after it was released the Roadster became a familiar sight in men’s fashion editorials and film wardrobes, favored by stylists looking for a watch that conveyed modern luxury with a sporty edge. Its bold case shape and distinctive dial made it instantly recognizable on screen and in print, reinforcing the model’s reputation as one of Cartier’s most expressive modern designs.
