1956 Omega Seamaster Chronometer Vintage Mens Watch - 18K Gold

Omega

Item No. 9662

Today's offering showcases this quite uncommon and collectable Seamaster Chronometer in original condition.

Seamaster Chronometers made post-1952 are one of Omega's seldom seen vintage watches. They featured all of the rugged sportiness of the Seamaster line coupled with an officially certified chronometer movement.

After their release and after Omega divided the line into two models in 1952, the "plain" Seamaster, a sport watch without chronometer certification, and the Constellation, the higher-end chronometer option, Omega only made a relatively few Seamaster Chronometers.

The second half of the 1950's were an important time for Omega. In 1955 Omega introduced a new series of movements, the 500 series, that would become famous powering their flagship watch, the Constellation, and would be officially certified by the "Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres" (Swiss watch governing body) as a chronometer, the highest honor given to a movement. Then in 1960 produced 20,000 Constellations in succession that all achieved chronometer status with no failures.

These robust movements were one of the finest extensively produced automatic movement and one of them, a 505, is the engine that powers this Seamaster Chronometer.

It measures 34mm in diameter the size of a Rolex Date watch. It was presented in 1957 to a member of the American Re-insurance Company for 25 years of service. The American Re-Insurance Company, founded in 1917, was the first U.S.-owned reinsurer and was started in Pennsylvania and then re-located to New York City as it grew.

It is fully Omega down to the untouched dial, hands, winding crown, and even original signed Omega crystal! Its only replaced part is its crown, which is a correct Omega service replacement.

Its case is in excellent condition with only fairly mild remnants of wear and fairly mild signs of previous polishing. Both hallmarks, which are on the underside of two lugs, are still very crisp.

Its dial, with wonderful distinctively styled markers, is original and untouched. It has warmed to a sepia tone, giving it a true vintage look.

One of our Master Watchmakers has fully serviced the watch which consisted of fully disassembling the movement, carefully inspecting each part, replacing the worn stem and crown with correct Omega replacements, reassembling and lubricating the movement, and extensive timing testing and regulation (a $795 value).

For the finishing touch we have equipped it with a brand new crocodile strap and aftermarket Omega style buckle making it ready for immediate enjoyment.

Included with the purchase is a one-year international warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate.

A fine watch with truly impressive capabilities.

Note: A published example of a Seamaster chronometer watch can be found in John Goldberger's work Omega Watches, 2005, pg. 137.
