Launched in 1960, the Accutron was the world's first fully electric watch and at the time the most accurate timekeeping mechanism ever devised. They are remarkable watches with a fascinating story.

The tuning fork technology was so accurate that NASA used it for timing for new satellites and for timekeeping in their spacecraft. The U.S. government even asked Bulova to delay the release of their cutting edge new watches for fear the technology might fall into the hands of the Russians. An Accutron watch movement sits on the moon's Sea of Tranquility today, in an instrument placed there in 1969 by Apollo 11 astronauts.

These watches use a battery driven tuning fork whose vibrations are converted by a special index mechanism into an almost smoothless rotary motion of the hands. At the time tuning fork watches were the most accurate timekeeping mechanisms ever devised.

While Bulova patented the tuning fork based movement made by ESA often associated with its Accutron brand, they also licensed it for a brief period of time to a few other companies like Omega.

While several different Omega models utilized this movement, this example was part of the company's flagship Constellation line. Its original dial has been meticulously custom refinished in a Tiffany robin's egg blue color - the printing could pass as Omega factory done to the naked eye.
