Created in 1967 by Omega's sales director Robert Forster, the Dynamic is an iconic example of a true retro style. The clean and functional watch, a considerable success for Omega, possessed a number of designed elements that made it stand out:
- An ellipse shape with recessed crown determined to be the best geometric shape for the wrist, determined after extensive study
- Easy to read dial with "time zone" sections
- Unicoc case with hermetically sealed crystal water-resistant to a depth of 30m.
- Available with a stainless steel bracelet or easily interchangeable water-resistant Cor-fam straps
According to an Omega advertisement at the time, "The shape of the Omega Dynamic was determined by the anatomy of your wrist; its dial by the workings of your eyes; its strap by the physiology of your skin."
We are pleased to offer this uncommon and extra large model, ref. 166.081, from the first generation Dynamic line.
From our experience it is the most uncommon reference in the early Dynamic line and was only branded "Geneve", although period advertisements show it was sold under the "Geneve Dynamic" line.
It is the only non-oval Dynamic case in the early line and like all other Dynamics uses the same interchangeable strap or bracelet design.
At over 39mm in diameter not including the crown, this big fellow fills out even a full size wrist.
As one of the early Dynamics, before Omega switched to using the 1000 series movements for the line, it was powered by Omega's high-grade caliber 565.
Omega's top-tier caliber 565 movement, one of the last superior 500's series movements used before Omega began trying to reduce their costs, was the top-tier offering of the 500 series. It has 24 jewels and a quick-setting date and is arguably the finest mass-produced automatic movement from the era.
It is 100% Omega down to the hands, crown, and original Dynamic bracelet. It presents in gorgeous condition - a 9.7 out of 10.
Its steel case shows only lights signs of polishing to the back. On the wrist it presents as mint. Its wonderfully designed dial with concentric circles is mint. And its very fine automatic Omega movement with quick-setting date has just been overhauled and serviced by a Master Watchmaker. It winds smoothly and is keeping very accurate time.
Included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate attesting to its performance.
An almost fifty year old Dynamic that presents like new on the wrist!
Please note: An example of this watch resides in the Omega museum, and a published example can be found in Marco Richon's work Omega: A Journey Through Time, 2007, pg. 483.
