Today's offering showcases this very cool full size Omega f300 Chronometer watch.
For the movement the company used a patented tuning fork based Accutron movement made by ESA and licensed from Bulova and finished by Omega.
Launched in 1960, the Accutron was the world's first fully electric watch and at the time the most accurate timekeeping mechanism ever devised. They are remarkable watches with a fascinating story.
The tuning fork technology was so accurate that NASA used it for timing for new satellites and for timekeeping in their spacecraft. The U.S. government even asked Bulova to delay the release of their cutting edge new watches for fear the technology might fall into the hands of the Russians. An Accutron watch movement sits on the moon's Sea of Tranquility today, in an instrument placed there in 1969 by Apollo 11 astronauts.
These watches use a battery driven tuning fork whose vibrations are converted by a special index mechanism into an almost smooth less rotary motion of the hands. At the time tuning fork watches were the most accurate timekeeping mechanisms ever devised.
Here are some of the watch's features:
- Originally guaranteed to be 99.9977% accurate on your wrist (not just in a laboratory) - Accurate to within a minute a month
- Durable and simple - its few moving parts don't require usual watch maintenance and repair
- It never needs winding - a remarkable feat over forty years ago
It is 100% Omega down to the original hands, winding crown, and signed crystal and presents in gorgeous condition. The striking burgundy gradient original dial is mint. The case presents as just short of perfect mint (it may have been replated at some point).
For the finishing touch it comes equipped with a new high quality leather strap making it ready for immediate enjoyment.
Included with the purchase is a one-year warranty on the movement and its function and a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity.
An four decade old Omega that looks almost like new!
Note: Some might be interested to note this model was worn by former NYC mayor and House of Representatives member Ed Koch - his can be viewed here.
