Item No. 7792
$ 6,195.00
Today's offering showcases this elegant and fairly large third quarter 19th century French gilt-bronze figural mantel clock owned and used by the "Man in Black", the late Johnny Cash in his master bedroom.
It is marked “Koblin 17569" and features a wonderfully done reclining hunter sculpture with a rifle between his knees and sits on a beaded and leaf-case base, raised on an associated carved giltwood plinth.
It has a 3 1/2-inch white-enameled dial with Roman numeral chapters indicated by shaped hands enclosing a key-wind chiming mechanism.
Johnny Cash was one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 90 million records worldwide. His wide ranging musical style embraced country, rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, folk, and gospel sounds, and this expansive appeal earned him the rare honor of being inducted into the Country Music, Rock and Roll, and Gospel Music Halls of Fame. He was the personification of country music to many people around the world.
He created many beloved and often chart-topping hits like “Ring Of Fire”, "I Walk the Line", “Sunday Morning Coming Down”, “Folsom Prison Blues”, “Hurt”, “Jackson”, “Man In Black”, “A Boy Named Sue”, “Flesh and Blood", “Ballad of a Teenage Queen”, and “Don’t Take Your Guns To Town.”
Mr. Cash received multiple Country Music Association Awards, Grammys, and other awards across a wide range of categories and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Cash number 31 on their "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" list.
His clock presents in excellent untouched original condition. The border on the wood plinth is missing details in a couple of small sections and shows a bit of wear from the clock sitting on it in Mr. Cash's bedroom.
We acquired it with its pendulum safely removed and packed. The clock remains untested as we received it. Please inquire if you would like it serviced.
It is accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by Johnny Cash’s daughter Cindy Cash stating that the clock sat on the mantel in her father’s master bedroom.
This clock previously sold at Sotheby's in 2004:
