The beautiful and very fine pocket watch showcased in today's offering is an original example of one of Patek's early stem wound and stem set watches.
It is an "Extra Flat" piece made exclusively for Bailey, Banks, and Biddle the prestigious Philadelphia retailer who not only was a premier jeweler at the time, they were so respected they were commissioned by the U.S. government to update the Great Seal of the United States.
It's marvelous and extraordinarily high-grade ultra-thin movement, marked "Special" by Patek Philippe, enables the complete watch to measure a mere 8.5mm thick including the crystal at its thickest point. A thinner mineral crystal would even slightly reduce the thickness.
The centerpiece of this beauty is its untouched original decorated dial with wonderful texturing in the center and framing of the center and sub dial.
It's accentuated by the classically plain polished case which serves to not distract from the sophisticated dial.
The Patek caliber has wolf's tooth gearing, capped escape wheel and frosted gilt finishing with eight adjustments for extremely precise timekeeping.
It is all-original with matching signature that it was made for Bailey, Banks, and Biddle.
We were fortunate to acquire it in very pleasing original condition appearing to have been worn seldom and carefully in appreciation of its quality and value and then safely stored away in its original box.
Its untouched original dial is in better than near mint condition with only slight aging. Its case presents as better than near mint as well with a strong hinge.
Our Master Watchmaker has fully serviced the watch which consists of fully disassembling the movement, carefully inspecting each part, replacing any overly worn components with new Patek parts, reassembling and lubricating the movement, and extensive timing testing and regulation (a $
695 value). It is keeping time within a few seconds per day.
Included with the purchase is a one-year international C.O.T. warranty on the movement and its function and a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity.
If you would like us to obtain an Extract from the Patek Philippe archives for you please inquire.
Accompanying the watch is its original fitted Bailey, Banks, and Biddle box.
Patek Philippe:
Patek Philippe bears the standard of the finest watch manufacturer in the world and holds world records for the most expensive watches in the world.
During the 1860's and '70's, Patek Philippe produced only fewer than approximately twenty watches per day (contrast this with Omega and other fine watch manufacturers that produced 500 - 1,200 pieces per day) making original examples very rare and collectable.
Bailey, Banks, and Biddle:
Besides the Presidential Seal, the company also designed and made many of the military medals that are still used today, including the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the first 40,000 Purple Hearts awarded, as well as class rings for West Point and Annapolis.
