1935 Rolex "Disco Volante" Flying Saucer Style Vintage Mens Steel Ref. 2947 Watch - Exceedingly Rare

Rolex

Item No. 8392SH

Today's offering showcases this exceedingly rare and virtually unknown reference 2947 Rolex done in the "Disco Volante" Flying Saucer style.

The very-rare-but-still-more-common-than-this-model traditionally referred to as the UFO, Flying Saucer, or "Disco Volante" in Italian, is the ref. 3190 which has sweep seconds and a screw back. It was made concurrent with this watch, the virtually unknown ref. 2947.

Our extensive research turned up no other examples ever seen or discussed on the internet and only one to ever come up at auction - thirty-two years ago at Antiquorum. While we are not suggesting that only two examples exist, an extensive search could not find any other or any mention of another.

It has a wonderfully styled case done in the shape of a flying saucer. Powering the watch is a Rolex chronometer "hunter" movement originally adjusted to six positions and marked Chronometer.

Note: The dial and movement have previously been swapped by a watchmaker with a period correct one from a Rolex Viceroy which is why the dial is marked Oyster Royal. The movement is the same caliber as the original.

Its case, which has a really pleasing and rare design and well-balances function with interesting form, is in excellent condition with only light wear around the underside not visible when it's being worn. It strongly retains its original case number.

Note that the case back has been snapped back on in perfect alignment since the photos were taken.

One of our Master Watchmakers has fully serviced the watch as it is which consists of fully disassembling it down to the last screw. Photos of the inside available upon request.

For the finishing touch, we have equipped it with a brand new Hirsch strap, and it comes with a period correct Rolex buckle making it ready for immediate enjoyment.

Included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. international warranty on the movement and its function and a full-page custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity.

An exceedingly rare and cool Disco Volante Rolex.
