In the 1930's through the 50's, after patenting their Oyster case and in the midst of their high output of utilitarian sports watches, Rolex also made much more elegant dress watches. These fine wristwatches often combine a superior hand-wound mechanism with beautiful aesthetics.
The elegant and uncommon dress Rolex showcased in today's offering is a classic and wonderfully styled example of this phenomenon. It features very fine and dramatic Art Deco styling and a well-executed handwound movement.
Unlike most ladies dress Rolex watches encased in 14K made for the U.S. market, this is a true all-Swiss Rolex creation.
With its prominent sweep seconds, a very uncommon feature on ladies watches from the era, its technical dial could serve the needs of nurses or women participating in other medical, technical, or sporting fields.
Its classically elegant and understated round case - in an era where most women's watches were more decorative - is a very suitable match for its practical dial. While quite elegant, the design of the watch down to the winding crown and patented Super Balance movement adjusted to two positions, a rare occurrence for a ladies watch, its design and construction are more in line with Rolex's very fine mens watches from the era, giving the watch a feel of it having a certain professional gravitas to it.
It is all-original and in pleasing condition down to its cabochon crown, a feature as we mention above most often found on mens watches with this round style. Its case is near mint with a light protrusion on the back. On the wrist it presents beautifully. Its untouched original dial shows only light aging.
One of our watchmakers has disassembled it down to its last screw and cleaned and oiled it. For the finishing touch we have equipped it with a new genuine Java lizard strap making it ready for immediate enjoyment. It is also accompanied by the vintage rose gold plated expansion bracelet that was on it when we acquired it.
Included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate.
