1930's Omega - Tissot Omega Caliber 28.9 (Lemania 13CH) Vintage Mens Midsize Chronograph - Stainless Steel

Omega

Item No. 8219SH

Today's offering showcases this rare and historically significant Omega - Tissot chronograph with Omega 28.9 T2 / Lemania 13CH movement and fabulous enamel dial.

The Omega 28.9 chronograph was Omega's first true wristwatch chronograph - the first small wrist chronograph movement made by Omega in 1932 when the company had merged with Lemania and Tissot.

Made in only very small quantities, Lemania produced the movements for Omega / Tissot. A small movement by modern standards, it was very short lived. Within approximately a year of its release, Omega switched course and began introducing watches based on the larger Lemania calibre 15CH (Omega 33.3) in 1933, at which point the 28.9 was slowly phased out of the range until it was discontinued by 1943.

The calibre 28.9 was designed primarily as a small wrist chronograph to be worn for sports or by professionals and was marketed primarily to sportsmen and pilots. It paved the way for the more robust and larger caliber 33.3 (Lemania 15CH) to the famous caliber 321 (Lemania 2310) and the caliber 861, fitted to the Omega "moon watch" still used by NASA astronauts today.

Despite the significance of the 28.9, not many examples exist - they are now quite rare and as such are sought after quite highly by collectors. This watch is the early monopusher version.

But what makes this watch particularly rare is the fact that it is double-signed, signed both Omega and Tissot. The movement is also originally hand-signed by a factory watchmaker Omega Watch Co. - Tissot.

The dial is white enamel, indicative of just how early of an example it is. It is original and untouched and in nearly flawless condition. It has a 1/5 second scale for precision timing for racing, aviation, and technical uses.

NOTE: The case back on the watch has been previously replaced by a fitting vintage replacement from Wittnauer. It is not signed outwardly which is nice so only discerning collectors would realize it isn't original.

One of our watchmakers has disassembled it down to its last screw and cleaned and oiled it and installed a new balance staff. It is keeping exceptionally accurate time in our testing position.

For the finishing touch we have equipped it with a brand new Italian calfskin leather strap making it ready for immediate enjoyment.

Included with the purchase is a full one-year warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate attesting to the watch's performance.

A couple of fine dual-signed Omega - Tissot chronographs have come up for offering in the past five years. Here are links to their lots: Christies; Phillips.

Omega-Tissot:
In 1925, Omega and Tissot began an important association with each other. Shortly thereafter (in 1930 to be exact), the SSIH Holding Company (Societe Suisse pour l'Industrie Horlogere) was founded with Omega and Tissot as its first members. In the 1930's the two company's even sold certain watches branded both Omega and Tissot, like the very rare watch featured.

Note: Amelia Earhart was wearing an Omega caliber 28.9 when she disappeared during her transpacific crossing. And stainless steel examples were used by the commanders and pilots of the Italo Balbo air force who used them on trans-Atlantic crossings.
