1963 IWC Vintage Mens Square Watch, Cal. 854 Automatic - Stainless Steel

IWC

Item No. 9398

The uncommon, very fine, and meticulously restored automatic IWC showcased in today's offering is powered by the Albert Pellaton designed Caliber 854 movement.

This mechanism's automatic winding system is a technical masterpiece, earning it high praise - Gisbert Brunner and Christian Pfeiffer-Belli in their work, Wristwatches Armbanduhren Montres-bracelets, proclaimed it "one of the best automatic movements ever built in Switzerland."

And the famous watchmaker Donald de Carle, in his book Complicated Watches and their Repair, stated that IWC's special automatic winding mechanism was "a simple and ingenious system, well constructed and beautifully finished."

The company built this watch in 1963 at the same they were building their famous Ingenieur line. Unlike most automatic IWC's from the era which almost always came in round cases, this is a much less common square cased automatic IWC.

While not a large watch at all, it wears just a bit larger than its dimensions.

It has all of its original parts and has just finished a true expertly done restoration. It presents as gorgeous condition - a 9.7 out of 10. Our photos couldn't begin to do it justice.

Its dial has been meticulously refinished - the printing could pass as IWC factory done to the naked eye. Its case presents as mint.

As part of the restoration, the movement has been freshly overhauled by a Master Watchmaker. It is running extremely strong and true, keeping time on par with a brand new UN in our testing recording position.

For the finishing touch, we have equipped it with a new leather strap making it ready for immediate enjoyment.

Included with the purchase is a one-year warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate attesting to its performance.

As of this writing we are listing a pair of these watches with black dials - this one with steel batons and another with white painted Roman indices.

A sixty year old IWC that amazingly looks like new on the wrist!
