The genius and importance of Abraham-Louis Breguet to the world of watch nearly defies comprehension. He established many of the fundamentals that built modern watchmaking – not just in terms of technical and aesthetic principles, but also in how to design and sell watches. He invented the tourbillon and set the template for the modern chronograph.
He also invented and produced the world's first self-winding watch (the Perpétuelle) in 1780, as well as the world's first wristwatch in 1810 (the Breguet No. 2639, for Caroline Bonaparte, Queen of Naples.)
One of the oldest watch brands still in existence, Breguet was founded in Paris in 1755. Over the years, notable Breguet patrons and timepiece owners include Napoléon Bonaparte, King George III, Queen Victoria, Alexandre I of Russia, Ettore Bugatti, Sir Winston Churchill, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Gioachino Rossini, Arthur Rubinstein and many others.
While hearing names like Patek, Audemars, Wilsdorf, Lepine, and Vacheron appropriately creates a sense of awe in those who appreciate watch history, as all of these men were luminaries, it must be said that a Breguet watch like this one is an order of magnitude rarer to fine than a similar one from Audemars, Vacheron, or even Patek Philippe. In the nearly 20 years we have been in business with many thousands of watches passing through these halls, we have never before owned a Breguet like this watch.
Breguet spared no expense in creating this gem which was destined for the French market.
Crafted from 18K white and bejeweled with a 34 high quality, original Breguet set diamonds, two emeralds, and green enamel, the beautiful original case made for Breguet embodies the height of elegance and refined taste. They have fire and sparkle one would expect from original Breguet diamonds.
The green enamel has a curved freeform pattern, and the rich green well-complements the emeralds. Our photos couldn't begin to do the watch justice.
In addition to the stunning case which is engraved "Breguet 772" on the back, the high-grade baguette movement elegantly also marked "Breguet 772" fittingly powers this masterpiece.
We were fortunate to acquire this ultra-rare and exclusive lady's timepiece in such fabulous original condition. It is even accompanied by its original clasp.
Its original 18K white gold, diamond, emerald, and enamel case is better than near mint, indicative of a watch worn with respect for its incredible rarity and value.
The approximately 100-year-old untouched original silver dial shows only fairly light signs of aging. And at the right viewing angle, portions of the blue steel hands really show their color. As one might expect they are moon-shaped in the style adapted by other makers that came to be known as "Breguet moons".
The extra-fine, Breguet movement is very clean and keeping very accurate time.
One of our Master Watchmakers has disassembled it down to its last screw and cleaned and oiled it making it ready for immediate enjoyment.
The watch comes equipped with a new Hirsch leather band. Accompanying it are the original or period black grossgrain ribbon band that has been cut that has the original clasp.
Included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. international warranty on the movement and its function and a full-page custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity.
