1947 Omega Cosmic Large Vintage Triple Date, Moon Phase Watch - 18K Gold Plated with Box

Omega

Item No. 9412

In 1947, Omega released to the world the first complicated watch featuring a moon phase readout it had ever built.

Called the Omega Cosmic, it was extremely complex even in comparison to today's watches, and could display the month, date, and day of the week with moon phase When set correctly it could be used as a precision instrument or as a display of incredible workmanship purchased to adorn a deserving gentleman's wrist.

Today's offering showcases this beautiful and rare example of an early Cosmic. This is the largest size Cosmic, measuring a full 37mm in diameter without the crown, and 47mm long, it's larger than a Rolex Datejust. We've photographed the watch on both a small and a large wrist for reference.

Its shapely and large-for-the-era 18K gold plated case presents beautifully on the wrist. The edge of the case back has gold wear through that has been filled.

Its silver dial with its apertures for displaying the month, day, and phases of the moon is original and untouched, as our its original sub dials. It presents in excellent condition with only light aging.

A Master Watchmaker has fully serviced it, and all functions are working well (a $995 value).

It is running incredibly strong and true, keeping time essentially on par with a brand new Omega in our testing recording position.

For the finishing touch, it comes equipped with a brand new leather strap and aftermarket Omega style buckle making it ready for immediate enjoyment.

Accompanying the watch is an original Omega box.

Included with the purchase is a one-year international warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate.

Note: An example of this model resides in the Omega Museum in Switzerland. A published example can be seen in Marco Richon's work, Omega: A Journey Through Time, 2007, pg. 471.

Complicated Omegas:
Usually when things are complicated, it means more stress, more work, and more effort, but in the end, it's worth it. The same holds true for vintage wristwatches, where gifted artisans and engineers from years gone by labored months and years to create complicated timepieces that transcend art and talent. When it comes to vintage wristwatches, the highest realms of respect and value are reserved for these watches that do much more than merely tell time.
