Today's offering showcases this all original and uncommon "tropical cased" automatic IWC powered by the Albert Pellaton designed Caliber 854 movement.
IWC crafted its case in a so-called "tropical or hypo allergenic style", using mixed case materials. It has a classic and understated style with solid 14K gold top and stainless steel back.
This mechanism's automatic winding system is a technical masterpiece, earning it high praise - Gisbert Brunner and Christian Pfeiffer-Belli in their work, Wristwatches Armbanduhren Montres-bracelets, proclaimed the 85x series "one of the best automatic movements ever built in Switzerland."
And the famous watchmaker Donald de Carle, in his book Complicated Watches and their Repair, stated that IWC's special automatic winding mechanism was "a simple and ingenious system, well constructed and beautifully finished."
IWC built it in 1963 at the same they were building their famous Ingenieur line and with equipped it with the same movement. These dress watches are more elegant than the pragmatic Ingenieur but share similar high-performance timekeeping qualities in normal wearing conditions. And compared to an Ingenieur, because they do not have a second inner back, the cases are thinner and lighter on the wrist.
At 34mm in diameter, it is the size of a Rolex Date model.
It is in original condition, fully original down to the dial, hands, and original fish signed crown. It presents nicely on the wrist. As is not surprising, the back shows spots of corrosion from aging most likely in a tropical environment. The untouched dial is mint.
Our watchmaker has freshly cleaned and oiled the movement, which is running very strong and true. For the finishing touch we have equipped it with a new lizard strap and the watch's original IWC buckle making it ready for immediate enjoyment.
Included with the purchase is a one-year warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate attesting to its performance.
