1910's Patek Philippe Vintage Calatrava Pre-ref. 446 Mens Midsize Watch - 18K Gold

Patek Philippe

Item No. 10322R

Arguably the company's most well-known vintage model line, the Calatrava Collection, is most widely known for its iconic Ref. 96, introduced in the 1930's, which is commonly understood to be Patek Philippe's first creation from the Calatrava collection.

But calling it the first Patek Calatrava watch is a bit oversimplified.

Concurrent with the ref. 96, Patek made an essentially identical watch that looked just like a smaller 96, and Patek numbered it the reference 446. It measured 28mm in diameter, a small mens or "boys" size at the time.

But adding even more complication, before the Calatrava was launched as such, Patek made a few watches that appear identical in construction but pre-date the official beginning of the Calatrava. In this case by nearly two decades!

Today's offering showcases this extremely early and rare Patek made before Patek began numbering their references. Made circa 1910 or shortly thereafter, while Patek was beginning to make wristwatches, it is an early Patek wristwatch. But even much more interesting and historically significant from our perspective, is how closely the watch resembles the future 446 Calatrava, yet made over two decades before its launch.

In design and construction, this is essentially a 446 - just without small seconds. And with a different dial variation that what was used on 446's.

In a sense, it could be seen as the original Calatrava...a Calatrava style Patek made before Patek named these watches Calatravas.

Like all Calatrava, it showcases sleek lines and subtle elegance. As Patek Philippe aptly describes, "These inimitably elegant men's watches are impervious to short-lived trends, recapturing the hearts of each new generation."

With a case that appears to be identical to a 448, it fully embraces the Bauhaus style famously associated with early Calatravas - the design principle of “form follows function”. It achieves its powerful impact through the use of clean, simple, and elegant lines.

Powering it is its illustrious original Patek Philippe caliber 10-200 movement - the same movement that powered the 96's and 446's - unquestionably among the finest hand-winding movements ever built. Unlike later 10-200's this extremely early one features "wolf's tooth" winding gears.

It has fully Patek parts down to all hands and the signed winding crown. It presents beautifully on the wrist. The case is scratch-free with only light wear and signs of previous polishing.

The black gilt dial was previously very well-restored in vintage times and remains in excellent condition.

One of our Master Watchmakers has fully serviced the watch which consists of fully disassembling the movement, carefully inspecting each part, reassembling and lubricating the movement, and extensive timing testing and regulation (an $895 value). It is running very strongly and keeping very accurate time.

For the finishing touch, we have equipped it with a brand new crocodile strap making it ready for immediate enjoyment.

Included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. international warranty on the movement and its function, a full-page custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate.

Don't miss the opportunity to own this classic and rare Patek Philippe.
