For the Rolex connoisseur or the wife of a Rolex connoisseur....today's offering showcases this a Rolex Art Deco wristwatch with a true rarity of a sector dial. Made for the high-end British retailed Pidduck in 1934, its larger than many similar ladies Rolex watches from the era.
The centerpiece of this watch is its amazing sector dial. It has an outer sectored section with cool mirriored inner perimeter who tone changes as the light hits at different angles. It is accented by wonderful heated blue steel "diamond" hands.
While busy developing their Oyster case, Rolex also crafted lady's pieces to meet the needs of their wealthy female clients. The fine wristwatch featured in this offering is an example of one of these very early Lady Rolex timepieces. Rolex was one of the pioneers of the wrist-worn watch.
Its pleasing case is slightly larger than many similar Art Deco ones from the era. Powering this gem is a fine, early Rolex "Rebberg" timekeeping mechanism.
It double-signed dial bears the name of the prestigious UK jeweler Pidduck who sold the watch. Founded in 1841 in Hanley, Staffordshire, Henry Pidduck & Sons quickly earned a reputation as one of Britain’s most distinguished goldsmiths, jewellers, and watchmakers. Under founder Henry Pidduck - who even served as Mayor of Hanley in 1864 - the firm combined fine watch-craft, silversmithing, and retail prestige, expanding to a second flagship on Lord Street, Southport.
Notably, just one year before this watch was made they were entrusted with designing the famed Hales Trophy (Blue Riband) for the fastest trans-Atlantic liner in 1933, a marvel of gilt silver and classical symbolism. That fame may have resulted in this present Rolex being sold there. Today, timepieces bearing the Pidduck name reflect this distinguished provenance, linking rich 19th-century British retail heritage with enduring craftsmanship..
We were fortunate to aquire it in such wonderful original condition. Its case is in beautiful condition. It shows hardly any signs of previous polishing - it Rolex mark on the back is fantastically crisp.
Its original dial - about a century old - is still in very pleasing condition.
One of our Master Watchmakers, who used to be the watchmaker for an authorized Rolex dealer and was given special training by Rolex at their Beverly Hills Service Center, has fully serviced the watch which consists of fully disassembling the movement, carefully inspecting each part, installing a new correct mainspring, reassembling and lubricating the movement, and extensive timing testing and regulation (a $795 value).
These watches are known for not operating especially well because of their age, but this one, which we have also timed on a machine that spins it in all directions simulating it being worn on the wrist, is keeping very acceptable time.
Included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. international warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity.
