Like today, in the 1940's no name better captured the idea of embracing the best life had to offer than that of Tiffany & Co.
One of their special offerings were Tiffany & Co. branded watches, many of which were made for the company by one of the fine manufacturers.
Although the maker's name was often hidden, the retailer contracted with a number of the world's fine watch and jewelry making firms to produce these treasured timepieces.
Today's offering showcases this classically elegant Tiffany & Co. mens precision seconds watch made by Movado for the prestigious retailer .
During Movado's glorious period from 1912 through the 1950's, when such innovations as the polyplan movement, Calendomatic, and exceptional in-house chronographs pushed the envelope of horological technology, and original designs such as the Museum watch took their place in history, their wristwatches enjoyed a level of prestige reserved only for works of the finest watchmakers.
Its lovely mid-sized square case is elegant showcasing an Art Deco hooded lug design.
The centerpiece of the watch is its salmon colored dial with precision markings and a pronounced sweep seconds hands. Its dial features 1/5 second markings for precision timing for sporting and technical uses, the most precise recording a watch of the era could have as it beat five times per second and each beat is recorded on the dial.
Although doctors don't need 1/5 second calculations to take someone's pulse, watches like this with large, easy to read sweep seconds were often marketed as doctors and nurses watch in period advertising.
For the movement Movado used its very fine "in-house" Cal. 470 handwound movement made at the company's workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds.
The handsome case is excellent condition. The dial was very nicely restored in vintage times.
One of our Master Watchmakers, who used to be an authorized Rolex watchmaker who received training from Rolex at their Beverly Hills Service Center, has fully serviced the watch which consists of fully disassembling the movement, carefully inspecting each part, replacing any overly worn components and installing a new mainspring and crystal, reassembling and lubricating the movement, and extensive timing testing and regulation (a $495 value).
It is running very strong and true. Photos of the inside available upon request.
It comes equipped with a period style pigskin band. We also stock lizard and a variety of others straps in various prints, skins, and colors. Please ask us if you're interested.
For the finishing touch we have meticulously detailed it making it ready for immediate enjoyment.
Included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. international warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate.
If you are looking for a special treasure for someone in your life, this is it. Modern Tiffany watches don't match the charm and romance of this vintage original.
