In the 1930's through the 50's, in the midst of their high output of utilitarian sports watches, Rolex also made much more elegant dress watches. These fine wristwatches often combine a superior hand-wound mechanism with beautiful aesthetics.
The elegant and timeless dress Rolex showcased in today's offering is a classic example of this phenomenon.
It is full size for the era and for the style, measuring 34mm in diameter without the crown - the size of a Rolex Date watch.
It has all of its original parts down to the hands and winding crown and presents beautifully on the wrist.
Our example has a less common sweep seconds function and technical dial with 1/5 markings that served the needs of men in technical, sporting, and racing fields. We absolutely love this combination on the watch - it pleasingly blends a dress style with high performance and the gold hands and markers match the style. And we always love the blue steel lollipop seconds hands of models like this. In our opinion the balance of this watch is very nice.
Powering the watch is its high-grade original early style caliber 700 handwound movement with Super Balance that pre-dates the 1200 series, giving it an early vintage feel.
The dial, restored long ago in vintage times, has warmed to a light sepia tone, complementing the gold hands and markers very well and giving it a true vintage look.
Unlike most examples, it still fully retains its coronet and its serial number on the back which are still very strongly intact. Its case presents in excellent condition with only fairly light wear and light signs of previous polishing.
One of our Master Watchmakers, who used to be the watchmaker for an authorized Rolex dealer and was given special training by Rolex at their Beverly Hills Service Center to be an authorized Rolex watchmaker, has fully serviced the watch which consists of fully disassembling the movement, carefully inspecting each part, replacing any overly worn components with genuine Rolex parts like a new sweep pinion tension spring, installing a correct new mainspring, reassembling and lubricating the movement, and extensive timing testing and regulation (a $795 value).
For the finishing touch we have equipped it with a brand new distressed style leather strap with aftermarket Rolex style buckle making it ready for immediate enjoyment.
Included with the purchase is a one-year international warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate.
Don't miss the opportunity to own the perfect complement to your sporty Datejust, Sub, GMT, or Daytona.
