Today's offering showcases this scarce and pleasing Rolex Shock-Resisting Oyster made c. 1947 and sold c. 1952.
A popular model from the 1940's, it was produced during the WWII era when patriotic spirit ran high. It has always been a popular collector’s model, and its chunky Oyster case suggests how it was built like a tank.
Bold with a distinctive case design, it has a fairly thick case and faceted lugs.
This model was made at a time when Rolex was experimenting with branding. Different batches were given several different model names. The most known is the Army. It was also branded the Everest Observatory, the Air-Lion, Shock-Resisting, or branded only Rolex Oyster.
Rolex was a fairly early adopter of using shock protection in their movements, and this model was one of the early watches to offer it, as the dial proudly proclaims.
Our 4647 is all original, even retaining its uncommon original "Rolex +" crown which still screws down well.
Its luminous "military style" dial is original and untouched and has warmed to a full sepia tone, giving it a true vintage look.
Its rugged case is in excellent condition with strong facets on the lugs. The case body appears to never have been polished. Unlike most examples, it does not have significant wrench marks or much wear to the grooves.
One of our Master Watchmakers has fully serviced the watch which consists of fully disassembling the movement, carefully inspecting each part, reassembling and lubricating the movement, checking the seals, and extensive timing testing and regulation (a $695 value).
We have timed it on a machine that spins the watch in all directions simulating it being worn on the wrist, and it is keeping very accurate time nearly on par with a new Rolex, running within a few seconds per day.
We have brand new vintage style distressed leather straps that would look fabulous on the watch and give it a more casual look if you would like. Please inquire if you're interested.
Your watch is important to us, and we will take care of it for its lifetime. We provide the best after sale care in the business with an extremely experienced team of four Master Watchmakers all of whom each have over thirty-five years of experience and a large number of parts. One used to be the watchmaker for an authorized Rolex dealership and was given special training by Rolex at their Beverly Hills Service Center.
Included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. international warranty on the movement and its function and a full-page custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity.
