1950's Aristo Vintage Triple Calendar Chronograph, Stainless Steel - The Chronodato with Moonphase

Aristo

Item No. 7888

Today's offering showcases this beautiful all-original chronodato with moonphase Aristo chronograph with exceptional Valjoux 88 movement.

It features a large aviator-style chronograph look that also possesses capabilities that track the date, day of the week, month, and even phases of the moon.

Powering this fine chronograph is the important Valjoux caliber 88 mechanism equipped with a crown wheel and carrying arm, and a self-compensating flat balance spring. Built from 1947 until 1974, the Valjoux 88 ranks among the iconic chronograph movements because of the beauty of its design and components and is the most complicated iteration of the base 72 and 72C that powered famous Dato Compox watches like the six-figure Rolex 6036.

A truly complicated watch, it features seven hands and three windows on the dial, plus four pushers and a crown around the edge:

  • Central hour hand
  • Central minute hand
  • Central chronograph seconds hand
  • Central date by pointer
  • 30 minute counter at 3:00
  • 12 hour counter at 6:00
  • Moon phase disc at 6:00
  • Running small seconds at 9:00
  • Day window at 11:30
  • Month window at 12:30

Ulysse Nardin, Heuer, Eberhard, Baume & Mercier, Longines, and Universal Genève, among others all used the Valjoux 88 for some of their very complicated watches, and Heuer made certain watches for Aristo. The most famous of all Valjoux 88 powered watches is of course the Patek 2499, which added a perpetual feature to the calendar.

A true legend, a 2499 sold at Sotheby's in 2018 for $3,915,000.

Dato Compax watches have continued to increase in popularity. But the ones from the most prestigious makers have a big drawback for most collectors - they carry six-figure and in the case of the Patek even a seven figure price tag.

Which is why affordable Dato-Compaxes with moonphases like this Aristo are becoming more and more desirable.

It has all of its original parts. Its case is in excellent condition still retaining nice lines. Its untouched original silver, three color dial shows only fairly light aging. And its movement is clean.

One of our watchmakers has disassembled it down to its last screw and cleaned and oiled it. It's very fine movement is very clean. Photos of the inside available upon request.
