Today’s offering showcases this supremely elegant and sophisticated 1950’s Omega Ref. 3950 mens watch – a rarely seen “Cioccolatone.” Named by the Italians for its bold, squared shape case, evocative of an Italian chocolate bar, these sculptural dress watches have become increasingly collectible for their daring mid-century geometry and design-forward style.
One of the reasons collectors love them is because they wear larger than most cushion or rectangular shaped watches from the era. There 18K gold cases exude wrist presence. Its faceted sides and large curved lugs elevate its profile with quiet drama.
Its original black dial contrasts beautifully with elongated gold dagger indices and dauphine hands. Adding to its charm is the fact that despite not having a round case it is powered by an automatic movement, Omega’s very first self-winding movement.
Omega’s celebrated Caliber 354 “bumper” or “hammer” automatic movement is so-named because of the way one can gently feel the rotor swing back and forth against stoppers powering the watch as its being worn.
We were fortunate to acquire it with all of its original parts down to the dial, hands, and winding crown.
Its full size 18K gold case, which still retains some of its original Omega factory applied satin finish on the back, is in excellent condition. Most of it shows very little signs of previous polishing to the back. One hallmark has been polished. Its hallmark under the lug is still crisp, and it retains strong lines.
One of our Master Watchmakers has disassembled it down to its last screw and cleaned and oiled it making it ready for immediate enjoyment.
It is running strong and true, keeping time on par with a new Omega in our testing recording position.
For the finishing touch, it comes equipped with an aftermarket leather strap and original or vintage Omega buckle, and we have meticulously detailed it making it ready for immediate enjoyment.
Included with the purchase is a one-year warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate attesting to the watch's performance.
Your watch is important to us, and we will take care of it for its lifetime. We provide the best after sale care in the business with an extremely experienced team of four Master Watchmakers all of whom each have over thirty-five years of experience and a large number of parts. One used to be the watchmaker for an authorized Rolex dealership and was given special training by Rolex at their Beverly Hills Service Center.
