Today's offering showcases this uncommon and very collectable Rolex Oyster Perpetual "red letter" model #6105. Produced in limited numbers for a brief period of time in the early 1950's, these exclusive early Oyster Perpetual Date watches are fine and desirable.
This particular very rare "red letter" example has the word "Officially" in its chronometer designation done in original red printing, further increasing its desirability.
It is a so-called Ovettone (Italian for "large egg"), named for the large Bubbleback case.
The 6105 was also one of the relatively few Rolex models to feature the short-lived Super Oyster crown which was produced for only three years. The “Super-Oyster” winding crown was an attempt by Rolex to create a waterproof winding crown which did not need to be screwed down. While the system itself worked, in time the rubber seal perished and therefore this crown type was phased out after only a few years of production.
Housed in one of Rolex's water-tight Oyster cases, the wristwatch originally offered its owner complete protection against water, dust, and perspiration. Inside the rugged case Rolex placed their legendary Cal. A296 so-called "Bubbleback" self-winding movement, keeping the watch powered by only movements of the wrist.
Being an Ovettone and and also having a Super Oyster crown makes 6105's desirable. While this would be a great watch with just the above two distinctives, even more differentiating is its rare "red letter" dial. This special Rolex checks a lot of boxes.
We were fortunate to acquire it. All its parts are fully original down to the hands, red date wheel, and original Super Oyster winding crown. Its dial was previously restored in vintage times.
Its case is scratch-free and has been previously polished. It presents nicely on the wrist.
When we acquired it, it was accompanied by the period correct gold and steel Rolex "crimped link" Jubilee bracelet that is on it.
One of our watchmakers has disassembled it down to its last screw and cleaned and oiled it making it ready for immediate enjoyment.
Included with the purchase is a one-year international warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate attesting to its performance.
A very cool red letter Rolex for a fraction of the price of a Red Sub.
