The black dial is the star of this beautifully preserved circa 1954 Omega Seamaster Automatic.

It is not a modern reinterpretation of a mid-century design, nor a vintage watch given a freshly refinished face. Its dial is the original Omega dial that has accompanied the watch through some seven decades, and its restrained design is as handsome today as it was when new.

Against the deep black ground, slender applied steel-colored hour markers catch the light, their faceted surfaces bringing dimension to an otherwise wonderfully uncluttered dial. A fine outer minute track frames the display, while the original dauphine-style hands add the crisp geometry so characteristic of the best 1950s Swiss watches. Above the center sit the applied Omega emblem and the Omega Automatic signature; below it, the delicate Seamaster script completes the composition. The dial has the subtle signs of age one expects of an original vintage example, particularly around some of the markers, but retains excellent overall visual appeal. Its originality is far more compelling than the flawless appearance of a modern refinish.

The case is another reason to appreciate this Seamaster. It has our favorite mid-century style. Its broad, sculpted lugs sweep outward from the round stainless steel body, lending a striking presence to a watch measuring just 34mm across, the size of a Rolex Date watch.

Powering it is Omega’s caliber 500, one of the brand’s most respected automatic movements of the period. T It represents a moment before cost-cutting measures began to reshape production, making these movements particularly desirable among collectors who appreciate Omega’s earlier engineering standards. It is one of the finest mass-produced automatic movements from era - arguably the finest.

It has all of its original parts and is in very pleasing condition.

Its case presents in excellent condition. The case top has never been polished and retains the wonderful strong lines and subtle lug facets that we love about this model.

Its black dial, which appears original, presents as just short of mint.

Its caliber 613 handwound movement, originally adjusted to two positions for greater accuracy, and is very clean.

One of our Master Watchmakers has disassembled it down to its last screw and cleaned and oiled it. It is running very strong and true, keeping time essentially on par with a brand new Omega in our testing recording position.
