1958 IWC Vintage Cal. 853 Automatic Mens 18K Rose Gold Watch - Original Papers

IWC

Item No. 10097SH

The very fine and all-original automatic IWC with 18K rose gold showcased in today's offering is powered by the Albert Pellaton designed Caliber 853 movement.

This mechanism's automatic winding system is a technical masterpiece, earning it high praise - Gisbert Brunner and Christian Pfeiffer-Belli in their work, Wristwatches Armbanduhren Montres-bracelets, proclaimed it "one of the best automatic movements ever built in Switzerland."

And the famous watchmaker Donald de Carle, in his book Complicated Watches and their Repair, stated that IWC's special automatic winding mechanism was "a simple and ingenious system, well constructed and beautifully finished."

IWC built the movement of this very fine wristwatch in 1958 at the same time they were building their famous Ingenieur line. These dress watches were more elegant than the pragmatic Ingenieur but shared the high-performance timekeeping qualities in normal wearing conditions.

Its classic 18K gold case, lightly tinted rose in color, really gives it a touch of class.

It has all of its original parts and is in very honest condition.

It was made for a foreign market - it bears a second set of precious metal hallmarks on the case, and, interestingly, has an extra "Fab. Suisse" signature and two extra luminous dots above 12.

The insides of the lugs are worn from an expandable metal bracelet being previously installed. The rest of the case presents in excellent condition. The lugs and sides of the case appear to have never been polished.

Its dial is original and untouched in just short of perfect mint condition. It shows the slightest bit of aging under magnification and has warmed the tiniest bit with some sepia tone.

One of our Master Watchmakers has fully serviced the watch which consists of fully disassembling the movement, carefully inspecting each part, reassembling and lubricating the movement, and extensive timing testing and regulation (a $595 value).

It is running very strong and true, keeping time on par with a new IWC in our testing recording position.

For the finishing touch, we have equipped it with a brand new crocodile strap and aftermarket IWC style buckle making it ready for immediate enjoyment.

Included with the purchase is a one-year warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate attesting to its performance.

Accompanying the watch are its original papers.
