1960 Omega Vintage Mens Deluxe Dial Constellation, Automatic - Stainless Steel

Omega

Item No. 8748

Today's offering showcases this classic Constellation with "De Luxe" black arrowhead dial.

The 1960's were an important decade for Omega. In 1959 Omega introduced a new series of movements that would become famous powering their flagship watch, the Constellation, and would be officially certified by the "Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres" (Swiss watch governing body) as a chronometer, the highest honor given to a movement. The next year Omega produced 20,000 Constellations in succession that all achieved chronometer status with no failures.

One such movement in was the Caliber 505. This robust movement was one of the finest extensively produced automatic movements and is the mechanism that powers the Constellation featured here.

Here are some of its features:

  • Beautiful and desirable black De Luxe dial with striking arrowhead markers
  • Officially certified as a chronometer with 24 jewel movement
  • Long 50 hour running reserve keeps the watch consistently running, even when not worn daily
  • Precision micrometer regulator for small timing adjustments
  • Classic and elegant waterproof style case with 18K gold Constellation emblem on the back

It is fully Omega down to the dial, hands, and winding crown.

Its shapely case is in excellent condition with moderate signs of previous polishing. Note that while the stars have been previously polished, all 8 are visible in person despite what the photos seem to suggest. Its black dial has been extensively and meticulously re-restored by one of the leading dial experts in North America.

As many collectors might know, black dialled steel Constellations are very rare and valuable. When we purchased the watch the dial was black and had already been refinished in vintage times so we can't speak to the original color, and it has been priced accordingly. An Omega Extract could confirm the color, and if it originally was black, then the watch would be quite valuable.

One of our Master Watchmakers has disassembled it down to its last screw and cleaned and oiled and installed a new Omega case back gasket.

For the finishing touch, we have equipped it with a brand new Teju lizard strap and aftermarket Omega style buckle making it ready for immediate enjoyment.

Included with the purchase is a one-year warranty on the movement and its function and a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity.

Note: An example of this model resides in the Omega Museum in Switzerland, and a published example can be found in Marco Richon's work, Omega: A Journey Through Time, 2007, pg. 367.
