Today's offering showcases this fabulous avante-garde "Emerald" DeVille watch, inspired by the designs that Andrew Grima created for Omega and introduced in 1971.
"Grima, who was arguably his generation’s foremost jeweler, counted Queen Elisabeth II among his clients. The Emerald line is distinguished by the generous proportions of its emerald-cut crystals of precious stone, quartz or mineral glass.
Initially, the pieces were reserved for the top of the Constellation range but as the Emerald line was extended, were increasingly seen in the De Ville line.. The Emerald line was only produced at OMEGA until 1973 but it left a lasting impression. Though a lost line at OMEGA these watches remain a "Premiere" collection today showing just how good the design was." - via Omega Museum.
It is a small unisex or "boys" size model well suited for a woman. While most of these watches had thin handwound movements, this is one of the uncommon automatic watches. It is powered by the very fine and diminuitive caliber 663.
The bracelet has an interesting functional design that allows it to be freely sized and worn at any desired length without fixed increments.
It is 100% original down to the original dial, hands, winding crown, and crystal and presents in honest original condition.
Its case is in very good condition with light wear and one ding on the left hand side; its dial and crystal are in excellent condition.
Our watchmaker has just fully disassembled the watch down to its last screw and cleaned and oiled. It's fine original Omega movement is quite pristine and running true.
Included with the purchase is a one-year warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate.
Mr. Grima was honoured with an impressive array of prizes including twelve Diamonds-International Awards. He was the first jeweller to win the Queen's Award for Export in 1966 and is the only jeweller to have won the Duke of Edinburgh Prize for Elegant Design. In 1970, at about the same time he was designing for Omega he was appointed jeweller to Her Majesty the Queen. He was commissioned by Omega to create a highly aesthetic avant-garde collection. Grima was given a free hand and chose to stick to one principle: he would create the watch around the dial, no matter what its form or dimension.
His work is carried on by his wife and daughter, and the Grima website can be found here
