Designated as the transitional Submariner, many consider early examples to have the best combination of vintage aesthetic and modern wearability. Early examples have matte dials and painted indices, and all have scratch-resistant sapphire crystals and updated 3035 movements. Toward the end of their production, Rolex transitioned to a glossy dial with hour markers in white gold surrounds, giving the watch an updated modern look.

As the successor to the well-known 1680, this transitional Sub, launched in the late 1970's, was the first Submariner to be water-resistant to 300 meters, 50% deeper than the 200 meter rating of its predecessor. Though it's been roughly forty years since it was released, 300 meters is still the depth rating of a modern Submariner, and Rolex is still using black gloss dials with white gold surrounds.

This transitional Sub also pioneered the uni-directional bezel, a much safer improvement when diving over the bi-directional rotating bezel of previous Subs.

Besides its dial and sapphire crystal, the last major improvement the 16800 had over its 1680 precessor, is its caliber 3035 movement. The arrival of the 3035 heralded a new operating frequency for the Sub, beating at 4hz, which is 28,800 beats per hour. Its power reserve was also lengthened to 42 hours. But its core design remained similar to the cal. 1575 engine found in early Submariners, because Rolex knew they already had a winning movement with a level of accuracy and reliability.
