The Hamilton Watch Co., America's most iconic vintage watch firm, built treasured timepieces that are still cherished by many today. During their peak years, which lasted from the 30's into the 60's, the Pennsylvania establishment developed a reputation for innovation and quality, creating some of the finest American made wristwatches.
Today's offering showcases this limited edition Hamilton "Spur" ref. 6218, numbered 339.
Created in only 992 pieces, the limited edition Spur collection was issued in 1992 to commemorate the company's 100th anniversary and is a reproduction of the original very popular Hamilton "Spur" design from 1929.
It was created aesthetically as essentially an exact image of the original Spur. With Roman numerals set in a black enamel bezel and dramatic stylized "swirling" asymmetric circular case the Spur represented the best of American Art Deco design in the 1920s.
The elusive original Spur has been called the King of Hamiltons. It is considered among the most recognizable and sought-after early Hamilton wristwatch models. Ahead of its time, as Hamilton’s first asymmetric wristwatch, it foreshadowed the avant-garde designs of the 1950s that wouldn't come for another two and half decades.
The Spur was expensive in 1929, selling for $125.00, between one-third and one-quarter the cost of a brand new Ford Model A automobile.
We were fortunate to acquire our limited edition commemorative Spur in such gorgeous condition. The watch has all original parts, and it comes on an only lightly worn Hamilton band with original buckle.
Its case presents as just short of perfect mint. Its untouched original dial is mint. And its movement is pristine.
Our Master Watchmaker has fully serviced the watch which consists of fully disassembling the movement, carefully inspecting each part, replacing any overly worn components, reassembling and lubricating the movement and extensive timing testing and regulation (a $495 value).
Included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. warranty on the movement and its function, a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity, and a new timing certificate.
