The Météore is a fascinating illustration of what Hermès can do when it approaches a watch primarily as an object of design. Instead of relying on a conventional dial surrounded by an ordinary bezel, Hermès breaks the watch into a series of concentric elements.

A broad brushed steel case surrounds a narrow solid 18K gold ring with solid 18K gadroon with cartouche signed "Hermès", while the ivory dial itself is pushed inward and given an unexpectedly playful arrangement of applied gold Roman numerals. The eye is drawn from one layer to the next.

That dial is especially distinctive. The Roman numerals are deliberately eccentric in their placement and orientation, giving what could have been a very traditional combination of ivory, gold, and Roman figures an entirely different personality. There is an almost hand-drawn informality to the composition, yet it remains unmistakably elegant. The tiny black minute track provides just enough structure around the perimeter, while the slender gold hands allow the unusual typography to remain the focus.

At 32.8mm, it also represents a style of men's watch that has largely disappeared from contemporary luxury design. Its size make it well-suited for a woman to wear as well. Its dimensions are refined rather than imposing, but the broad case, gold gadroon, and unusual dial architecture give it considerably more visual presence than the measurement suggests.

That is ultimately what makes the Météore interesting. Hermès did not attempt to imitate the visual language of the established Swiss watch houses. It used familiar ingredients, Roman numerals, precious metal, an ivory dial, and a simple two-hand display, and rearranged them into something unmistakably its own. The result has wit and elegance in equal measure, with the sort of quietly unconventional design that tends to become more appealing the longer one looks at it.
