Today's offering features this very rare Connoisseur of Time Certified Pre-Owned Omega Seamaster 300M limited edition watch made for the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.
While Omega has often been the timer for Olympic games, for the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillihammer, Seiko won contract.
But Omega wasn't to be left in out in the cold that Olympics - the company specially designed a sports model for the Swiss Olympic Team for the games and became an official equipment provider, given one to each of the athletes. They also exclusively sold a very small number of the watches in Switzerland.
The watches were in constitution similar to what would become known as the "James Bond" watch after its appearance in the movie "Golden Eye," and bore the Swiss flag and the Olympic rings on the dial
They made several versions of the watch: An automatic chronometer watch made in limited, numbered series of 49 watches in 18K gold and 194 watches in steel. Two quartz versions, one full size and one midsized, were sold as a numbered series. No one seems to have seen one of the quartz watches numbered above 188, so it is presumed that only 194 of each size quartz watch were made for sale as well. To commemorate the year 1994, Omega tried to use the numbers 9 and 4 in the number of watches produced.
Our feeling is that these watches are undervalued for their rarity. The 1994 games are remembered especially for performances by Oksana Baiul, who won gold in figure skating narrowly defeating Nancy Kerrigan. I remember watching Katarina Witt skating to “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” in memory of the citizens of Sarajevo and U.S. speed skater Dan Jensen going for the gold.
Manuela Di Centa and Lyubov Yegorova dominated women's cross-country skiing, taking five and four medals for Italy and Russia respectively. A crowd of more than 100,000 saw Italy beat Norway by 0.4 seconds in the men's 4 × 10 km relay. Vreni Schneider won a complete set of medals for Switzerland in Alpine skiing, while Norway took a podium sweep in the men's combined competition. In ice hockey Sweden defeated Canada in a dramatic penalty shootout final.
This watch of the week showcases one of the midsized quartz versions. Its original case back does not bear the light inscription seen on the few of these watches sold to the public. Perhaps the lightly engraved inscription was removed when the watch was previously polished (we have left it just as we acquired it) or perhaps this was one of the watches given to one of the athletes.
Its case measures 36mm in diameter without the crown and guards, 40mm with them. As a midsize Seamaster 300m is well-suited for those with smaller or average size wrists.
Its large luminous hands and hour markers against its white dial make it easily legible at all times, and the rotating bezel and helium escape valve are designed for true diving uses. It was originally designed to be water resistant to 1,000 feet. It has a quick-setting hour for easy changing of the time zone and date.
These watches cleverly and originally came accompanied by five straps in the yellow, green, red, blue, and black, the five colors of the Olympic rings. We are an authorized retailer for Hadley Roma straps - please inquire if you would like to purchase aftermarket colored straps to pair with it.
It is all original and presents in gorgeous condition - a 9.5 out of a 10. Its case presents as mint with light signs of previous polishing. Its dial and crystal both are mint.
Like usual, a Master Watchmakers had performed any needed servicing. For the finishing touch, we have equipped it with a brand new leather strap and aftermarket Omega style buckle making it ready for immediate enjoyment.
Included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. international warranty on the movement and its function and a custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity.
