Personally Owned & Worn By Don McLean with Two COAs - Phobos Germany Pilots Triple Date Watch

August Steiner

Item No. 9106

Today’s offering showcases this very cool automatic triple calendar pilot's style wristwatch from our Connoisseur of Time Celebrity Collection, owned and worn by Don McLean.

Best known as the writer and performer of American Pie, McLean was one of the clear enduring and culturally significant American singer-songwriters of the twentieth century. Elegant without excess, this August Steiner dress watch reflects a sensibility rooted in restraint, longevity, and timeless proportion, qualities that closely mirror McLean’s artistic legacy.

Don McLean’s place in American cultural history is firmly secured by his 1971 epic American Pie, a song that has transcended popular music to become a generational touchstone. Frequently cited among the greatest songs of all time, it is studied, debated, and endlessly referenced for its poetic encapsulation of social change, musical history, and collective memory. Few works in American songwriting have achieved the same combination of commercial success, cultural penetration, and lasting interpretive depth.

Beyond that singular achievement, McLean sustained a long and respected career as a recording artist and performer. His catalog includes acclaimed albums such as American Pie, Don McLean, and Homeless Brother, and he scored multiple international hits, including his chart-topping rendition of Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) - a song that introduced millions to the emotional power of Van Gogh’s life and work through music. Across decades of touring, McLean built a reputation as a deeply committed performer and storyteller, earning admiration from peers, critics, and audiences worldwide.

In recognition of his lasting contributions, McLean was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, a distinction reserved for writers whose work has shaped the fabric of American music. His songs have been covered by countless artists across genres, and his influence can be felt well beyond the folk revival era from which he emerged. McLean’s career represents not just success, but endurance - a body of work that continues to resonate long after its initial release.

This watch is not a commemorative object or stage accessory, but a personal wristwatch of Mr. McLeans.

This watch:

This watch draws its inspiration from the cockpit, a place where legibility and mechanical purpose work together into a single functional design. This Phobos triple calendar captures that ethos with unusual clarity. Not to be confused with the Phobios brands, which are watches made in Hong Kong, this is a German made watch with 35 jewel automatic movement.

Its bold Arabic numerals, expansive minute track, and high-contrast dial are unmistakably aviation-influenced, yet layered with a level of complication beyond a simple pilot’s watch. The addition of a full triple calendar - day, date, month, and even 24-hour indication - elevates the watch from more a of utilitarian instrument into something more robust.

The watch's design is anchored by its fluted bezel and onion-style crown, subtle nods to historical navigational timepieces, while the multi-register layout adds interest to the dial.

Turning the watch over reveals an exhibition caseback showcasing its movement with a decorated rotor. At approximately 43mm, the large case offers a strong wrist presence consistent with pilot-style watches, while its curved lugs and thoughtful proportions keep it wearable.

It appears to have perhaps been inspired by the Chronoswiss watches.

It remains in excellent condition. We have not cleaned or polished the watch or done anything to the outside of it - we left it just as we acquired it.

One of our Master Watchmakers has tested and time it. We have also timed it on a machine that simulates it being worn on the wrist. It is keeping very accurate time.

Included with the purchase is a one-year C.O.T. international warranty on the movement and its function and a full-page custom printed Connoisseur of Time Certificate of Authenticity. Also accompanying it is a Certificate of Authenticity and Provenance from a well-known auction house.
