Piaget's golden age is perhaps best understood through watches like this one - it is Piaget at its most Piaget.
Rather than treating the watch as a movement surrounded by a case, Piaget approached the entire object as a piece of extremely fine jewelry, combining a high-grade ultra-thin mechanical caliber engine, natural stones, precious metal, and near flawless gem-setting into one remarkably cohesive design.
The eye encounters it in layers. The original green nephrite jade dial is the visual heart of the watch. Every natural stone dial is inherently unique, and this one has a beautifully mottled range of moss, olive, and brighter green tones that seem to shift across the surface. With no hour indexes to interrupt it, the stone is allowed to function almost like a miniature work of natural art, interrupted only by the restrained Piaget signature and elegant gold hands.
Piaget framed that dial with an original 18K white gold bezel set with 28 round brilliant-cut diamonds totaling approximately .56 carat and eight full-cut emeralds totaling approximately .16 carat. The diamonds bring crisp brilliance around the edge - they are near flawless: white, extremely clean, and full of fire as you would expect from a watch of this caliber - while the emeralds pick up the green of the jade and make the bezel feel integrated with the dial rather than merely decorative.
Piaget was one of the great pioneers of this look. After introducing its ultra-thin hand-wound caliber 9P in 1957, the manufacture began producing ornamental stone dials in 1963, using the extra freedom afforded by its exceptionally thin movements to create watches that other houses could scarcely imitate. By the later 1960s, hardstone dials, jewelry bracelets, and ultra-thin mechanics had become signatures of the maison's most glamorous works.
Its original 18K yellow gold bracelet completes the composition beautifully. It catches the light with a soft, fabric-like shimmer. Done in a fabulous bark motif gorgeously hand-decorated by Piaget throughout, it is quite ornate - a joy to look at under magnification. One can only imagine the number of hours one of Piaget's master jewelers spent crafting it. The contrast of warm yellow gold, cool white diamonds, vivid emeralds, and natural green jade gives the watch real richness, but the overall effect remains refined rather than excessive.
To power the watch, the manufacture used its celebrated caliber 9P, the later evolution of the landmark 9P family that helped establish Piaget as one of the defining names in ultra-thin watchmaking.
Its renowned movement, one of the world's first ultra-thin wristwatch movement, measures a mere 2.15mm thick - less than the thickness of a US half-dollar! Despite its small size, it sacrifices nothing in performance, having earned a reputation as one of the most refined and reliable mechanisms on the supreme level of fine watchmaking.
Its condition makes the design even more compelling.
It is all original, including its two tiny case screws, which are often lost and replaced during a servicing for these watches.
The original unpolished case is in excellent condition with little wear. It retains all of its original factory finishing. A light polishing would make it present as essentially mint.
The original jade dial is essentially flawless.
